America's Obesity Epidemic

America has reached a critical point in time as it relates to the health of it citizens.  Obesity has now become a national epidemic.  Diseases which are a direct result of obesity include:  hypertension, diabetes, stroke, cancer and the list continues to grow.

The cost of obesity will impact the cost of hire for employers, result in a rise in medical costs, insurance and will eventually cost us all in the long run.

Please help us implement our programs to combat obesity, get the word out and join us in teaching health and increasing consciousness and knowledge.

Introductions:
Hello Deion, my name is Tracy Lightner, Founder of ThickHealth.org!  We promote health initiatives to combat obesity .  These are Co-Founders, Bryia and Brenique Lightner.  Thank you for taking the time to speak with us.

Tracy Lightner :
What we want to know is, what do you do to stay healthy?

Deion Sanders:
First of all eat right -no red meat.  I eat fish, chicken, turkey and thatís pretty much it,  I try to stay away from fried foods.  I try not to eat any fries,  anything white.

I like brown rice, wheat bread, I drink water, I work out maybe 3-4 times a week.  I try to get in a little cardio, a little bit, something .  I try to do something every day - something.   I donít care if it is pushups or sit ups or something before I get into the shower.

I take two showers a day so I like to do something before I get in there.  But the wife does a great job of keeping the family  healthy and making us nutritious meals.

I try to snack, you know with an apple or orange or something like that,  banana . . . throughout  the day as well.

Bryia Lightner:
Do you have a favorite exercise that you like to do?

Deion Sanders:
I have like one of these bands,  it hangs on my shower to remind me to do something.  I have a pull up bar in my garage.   I have a weight room  - Iím blessed to have a weight room.

We really are a healthy family, we play a lot of athletics, baseball, football basketball -we do everything.

Tracy Lightner:
What do you suggest children, people of size -anyone,  to take out of their diet to help them stay on track with their health?

Deion Sanders:
Red meat,  I would say take red meat out, take anything white out.  Like white bread, white rice, grits, grits . . . just anything white out.

You got to do something, you got to do something.   It didnít take a short amount of time to get that big or get large so itís not going  to go away in a short amount of time.  Itís a process but youíve got to do something every day, set a goal and try to reach it but  itís a daily grind,  itís a commitment - itís a commitment.

Tracy Lightner:
We thank you for this time. . .

Deion Sanders:
Thank you for being diligent and waiting on me when I had to play host to the most -Snoop & Diddy for our organizations.   But you were patient enough so God Bless you and thank you.

Deion directed this statement to the audience:

Please take heed to what they say.  What they are doing is very positive & very inspirational.  If they are living it -they are loving it and if they believe it -then you should too.
God Bless You.

Thank you!

CDC - Obesity is on the rise -- more than 72 million adults in this country weigh more than they should and it's making us sick. Heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, high blood pressure, breast and colon cancers, and many other diseases can be prevented or managed with the important decision to lose weight. The health statistics for African Americans point to the need for an individual and communal response to the problem of obesity. Forty-five percent of African-American adults are obese and the numbers are equally alarming for African-American children. The good news is that there is help for those who are struggling to maintain a healthy weight. The link above provides information about a variety of HHS and CDC programs designed to combat obesity and help people maintain a healthy weight.
